allie rasmus just spoke to sfo officials and she joins us live from sfo with some new information about flight delays. good morning, alley. >> reporter: good morning. you can see it's not raining right now. the weather is having an effect on travel here at san francisco international airport. if you look behind us, you can see a number of people unloading. this is supposed to be the busiest travel day of the year with over 100,000 people through sfo. but because of the low ceiling and visibility, the traffic management program is in effect from sfo. this is inside the terminal. there are a lot of people here. the security line was packed. it could get more problematic and hectic today. starting at 7:00, this airport won't be able to use all of the runways because of that traffic management program put into effect by the faa. that could mean delays up to four hours for flights to arrive here and also delays from 30 to 60 minutes for flights departing from sfo. the spokesperson talked to us about the weather conditions. >> this is one of these winter storms that usually comes out of the s

no word yet if it has any effect on sfo flights. if you are heading home for the holidays from the bay area and other parts of country you might want to be prepared to wait because in addition to traveling during the busy season it looks like you're traveling against mother nature and thanks to that winter storm in chicago, aviation officials say more than 350 flights out of o'hare and 450 out of midway were canceled. we are seeing the effects here at home. sfo reps say it's delayed a few flights in the bay area. that's not the only thing that will set back travelers today here. rain is moving into our region so unfortunately, the national weather service says this could make things messy for travelers. but the early bird flyers we spoke to say they are prepared. >> when i go to check in i'm two hours ahead with tickets ready. so if they tell me there's a delay i'll be able to catch another airport. i have three stops on the way home. so i'll hope time in between will make up for that. >> reporter: delays could impact connect flight

we spoke with the duty manager here at sfo. and that plane will try again later this afternoon at 3:00 before its flight to london. the last flight we believe that landed here at sfo before all traffic was shut down because of that dangerous weather was another united flight, inbound from frankfort, germany, and it, too, was struck by lightning. not once but twice. our own diane dwyer was onboard. >> you saw it. bam, it got hit once and the whole plane shook and about a minute and a half later, bam, it hit again. i talked to the flight attend t attendant. she said at this point the plane will be grounded. they'll check it all out for electrical problems. >> reporter: that plane also landed safely, and as diane mentioned, everyone's okay. there were 61 flights that had to be canceled last night. most of them regional. if you're on one of those flights and it's supposed to be taking off today or at least attempting to, there's a possibility some of these flights could be delayed because of the backlog. reporting live at sfo, bobr
